Enhanced Forest Management

A recognized area of excellence, EFM research includes intensive forest management systems such as genetic improvement, site preparation, fertilization, pest impact reduction, and density management for enhanced fibre production. We are also working on extensive management such as mixedwood management and systems that emulate natural processes. Complementary research is underway to develop the practices necessary to ensure that these systems are ecologically and socially sustainable; e.g., modeling to assess the long-term effects of various forest management regimes and of natural disturbance by fire on habitat supply for wildlife. The quality, quantity and impact of our research, the honors and awards received by our staff, and the strong history of funding from both government and industry attest to the Department's strength in Forestry.
