About Us
Welcome to the Department of Renewable Resources. Our Department houses a diverse group of academic staff and support staff who are united by a goal of developing and disseminating new knowledge on soils, forests, range, crops, and wildlife and how these features combine to form ecosystems. In particular we are proud of our ability to link biological, environmental and landscape features to develop better ways to manage ecosystems and natural resources. We hold the opinion that a combination of natural and carefully managed ecosystems will be needed to sustain the soils and biota, and the goods and services from ecosystems that society needs.
Our academic and support staff are committed to offering a friendly and welcoming environment for students. We are proud of our undergraduate programs in forestry, conservation biology, land reclamation and sustainable agriculture. We have a friendly atmosphere where professors take pride in their teaching, developing personal contacts with undergraduate students. Our graduate students come from diverse backgrounds and many countries. We offer research opportunities for graduate students in basic research problems at the organism, soil process or ecosystem level, but many of our graduate students study the management of ecosystems, linking their work to solving real-world problems. The work that we do has never been more relevant given the stresses on ecosystems because of demand for resources, climate change and loss of biodiversity. Our research and teaching is front and centre in society’s quest for sustainability and we are proud of our connections with the community at a local national and international level.
We encourage you contact us or drop by for a visit. We also encourage you to explore our web site and the information that it contains regarding our people, teaching and research programs and the exciting things that we do in our Department.
Finally, our report to the community (also on the web site) gives insight into recent activities of our Department.
